Ziegler Named AHS Head Girls Basketball Coach

The Archbold Area School Board named Brian Ziegler, a coach in the Archbold and Stryker school districts, as the head girls basketball coach.

The board made the decision at a special meeting, Friday, Sept. 19.

“We’re excited to have Brian as an addition to our coaching staff. We think he will be an outstanding role model for our kids,” said David Deskins, Archbold Area School District superintendent.

Ziegler has 19 years coaching experience. He coached in the Stryker district from 1989 to 2003. From 1995 until 2003, he was the varsity boys basketball coach.

During the 1999-2000 school year, Ziegler was named the Division IV District 7 Coach of the Year.

Ziegler coached as a volunteer in the Archbold school district from 2004 to 2006. He was hired as the Archbold Middle School eighth grade boys basketball coach starting with the 2006-07 school year.

The girls basketball position became open when the school board did not renew the contract of Kevin “Scoop” Miller. Miller had held the position for 10 years.

Because Ziegler does not have a teaching certificate, the board had to take special action to hire him. Hiring non-certified personnel to coach is allowed under Ohio Law.

Board members also had to withdraw the contract they previously awarded to him to coach eighth grade.

During the special meeting, the board approved the bus routes for the 2008-09 school year.

The issue had been put on hold at the Monday night, Sept. 15, board meeting.

The action approving the routes includes a provision that the routes will continue to be examined and adjusted.

Deskins said concerns were raised about how far students had to walk to bus stops, and the safety of some of the bus stop locations.
