Zelma Martin, born on April 20, 1926, the third daughter of Philemon and Mattie (Wyse) Frey, died Aug. 8, 2019, in Lancaster, Pa.
She had a happy childhood on the farm, filled with family, friends and church activities. She learned to sing from her father and from her mother she learned good cooking and how to have a meal ready for unexpected guests.
She discovered her love of nursing as a volunteer nurse’s aide during WWII.
She attended Goshen (Ind.) College for two years, then went to the Colorado prairies for her nurse’s training. She graduated with a BSRN from the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing in 1950.
She returned to Archbold to work in the doctor’s office.
On a vacation in Florida, she met her husband, Clayton Martin. They were married in 1958 and had two children.
She was beloved to her surviving children, Melissa Martin (Keith Frankman) and Sidney (Shari) Martin; her grandchildren, Matthew Martin (Brittney Hippensteel), Alex Martin (Kristina Stuart), Hannah Frankman, Keira Frankman, great-granddaughter Charlotte Martin; and her sisters Fern Schrock, Betty Shenk, Maxine (Paul) Diller, and Cara (Frank) Ulrich and their families.
Her warm hospitality, caring spirit, and playful laughter will be remembered in the hearts of many friends and family.
She never failed to make a place in her home and heart for those she cared for.
