Young Spring & Wire Building Perfect For Archbold Furniture

Pete Gstalder, vice president of Archbold Furniture, said there were three key things that brought the company back to Archbold.

First, “Archbold is home for us,” Gstalder said.

Second, Gstalder said being located in Archbold makes it easier to recruit certain types of employees. Some workers would be willing to commute to Archbold from Toledo, but West Unity, where the firm has been located since 1998, “is a little farther out.”

The third advantage is the building itself.

“Since the addition of the 50,000 square feet in 2003, it makes the building a perfect size for us. We can encompass the entire operation. It allows us to be under one roof.”

Having the business under one roof makes communication and coordination easier, he said.

Preparations

Archbold Furniture, which can trace its history in Archbold back to 1900, left the village in 1998 for the Williams County community.

News broke at the Monday night, Sept. 8, Archbold Village Council meeting that the company had agreed to buy the former Young Spring & Wire building for $1,550,000. Council approved transferring a tax abatement agreement from the former owners to Archbold Furniture.

Gstalder said company offi- cials hope to be moved into the building by Saturday, Nov. 1.

“We’re working hard to do it. We’re building up a lot of stock now, so we can shut down production for a week or two. It all depends on how it comes together.

Right now, crews are in the building, cleaning and repainting. More work will start taking place in mid-October, he said.

Outlet?

Archbold Furniture manufactures solid wood unfinished furniture products.

A sign at the building had advertised an outlet store, but Gstalder said someone put up the wrong sign.

“We had been debating whether or not to do an outlet. It just hasn’t justified itself.”

He said there will be a small showroom of products, and members of the public can order furniture through a catalog “at a real good discount.”- David Pugh
