Williams Nets 1000th Career Point, But AHS Loses To Titans

Down 65-64, Ottawa- Glandorf scored six points in the final four seconds to defeat Archbold 70-65, Saturday, Dec. 23, in non-conference boys basketball action at O-G.

Archbold (4-2) led 20-14 after the first quarter, which included a bit of history for Bryce Williams. Needing only five points to join the 1,000 Point Club, the senior hit the 1,000-point mark with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

O-G (7-0) outscored the Streaks 17-14 in the second period to cut the difference to 34-31 at halftime.

The Titans led 52-49 after three, and held on in a backand forth final quarter.

Jay Kaufman hit a basket to put the Titans up 66- 65 with four seconds on the clock.

After an Archbold timeout, the Streaks’ inbounds pass was intercepted by BJ Fortman. Fortman passed the ball to Chad Duling, who was fouled with two seconds left.

Duling hit two free throws, giving O-G a 68-65 lead.

After another AHS timeout, Archbold’s inbounds pass hit the rafters, giving the ball back to the Titans. Jake Dible was fouled after the inbounds pass, and he made both free throws for the 70-65 victory.

Four Blue Streaks scored in double figures.

Williams led the Streaks with 16 points, giving him 1,011 for his career.

He became the eighth AHS boys basketball player to hit 1,000 points in his high school career. Gene Goering (2004-08) leads the way with 1,612 points.

Others are Dan Borcherdt (2002-05) 1,422; Roger Springer (1965-67) 1,192; Lowell Spiess (1950-52) 1,168; Keith Roth (1993-96) 1,014; Joe Frank (1977-79) 1,008; and Joe Wyse (1986- 89) 1,007.

Eli Miller added 14 points.

Austin Wiemken and Rigo Ramos scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
