William “Bill” Rettig Jr., age 90 years, of Archbold, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 3, 2012, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold.
He was born May 2, 1921, at Eberstardt, Germany, the son of William and Dorothea (Mattes) Rettig Sr. He came with his parents to the United States in 1923 and moved to Archbold in 1938.
He married Cara Lauber on May 30, 1943, in Salinas, Calif.
During WWII, from 1942- 1946, he served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater.
He worked at Lugbill Bros. for 10 years before he was an Archbold postal employee for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Archbold, where he was a past council member and congregational president, and a member of the American Legion B.L.W. Post 311, having served as commander and chaplain.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Cara, who resides at Fairlawn Haven; two children, Stephen (Kathryn) Rettig and Stephanie (Jerry) King, both of Archbold; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elfriede Wright.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Reichert officiating. Interment preceded in the Archbold Cemetery with military rites by American Legion B.L.W. Post 311.
