Wilhelm G. Schmidt

Wilhelm G. Schmidt, age 92 years, of Archbold, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 7, 2008, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold.

He was born July 22, 1916, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Wilhelm and Adele Schmidt. He married Vera Charter on April 25, 1942, and she preceded him in death in 1993. He married Vera (Nafziger) Williams on Jan. 13, 1996.

Wilhelm was a retired Printer from The Toledo Blade. Prior to working at The Blade, Wilhelm, as a journeyman Printer, worked in Waterbury, Conn.; Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Jackson, Flint, and Detroit, Mich.

While at The Blade, he had his own insurance business. Upon retiring from The Blade, he was a volunteer in the Internal Revenue Service VITA program for 11 years.

Following that, Wilhelm was a Printer at the Historic Sauder Farm and Craft Village.

He was a member of the Central Mennonite Church near Archbold.

He is survived by his wife, Vera; daughters, Rose A. Sommers of New York City, and Gretchen L. Ursini of Carrollton, Texas; four grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; and sister, Martha C. Schmidt MD.

Memorial services will be held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the Central Mennonite Church with Pastors Jeffrey Smith and Cecily Rohrs officiating. Interment will precede at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Osborn Cemetery near Waldron, Mich.

The family suggests that memorials be given to Central Church, Sauder Village, or the donor’s favorite charity.

Short Funeral Home in Archbold was entrusted with the arrangements.
