When Traffic Lights Are Out, Stop! It’s The Law!

State law says when the traffic signals at an intersection are not working, all motorists must treat the intersection as an all-way stop.

Apparently, many motorists missed that day of driver education, or forgot.

While electric power to downtown Archbold was out Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 4, many motorists were sailing through the North Defiance Street intersections at Holland and Stryker streets, without a care in the world.

The village street department erected temporary stop signs at Holland Street and Stryker Street, but motorists on North Defiance Street could see the lights weren’t working– so why didn’t they stop?

It’s more than just a matter of obeying the law. It’s a safety issue. With drivers zipping through intersections willy-nilly, it’s amazing there wasn’t an accident.

Archbold police had their hands full, and couldn’t direct traffic at every intersection.

Nor could they catch the lawbreakers. If they had, they could have written a fistful of violations.

Motorists must stop when traffic lights fail.

Obey the law. It protects everyone.
