Wauseon defended its boys and girls Northwest Ohio Athletic League track and field titles, Tuesday and Friday, May 10 and 13, at Bryan.

Wauseon won the boys title for the second straight year, finishing with 137 points. Liberty Center was second with 113, and Archbold was third with 84.

The Indians won their third straight girls title, with 136 points. The Streaks were second with 126, and LC with third with 85.5.

Archbold finished with seven individual league championships.

Jack Fisher was a double winner. A junior, he won the 400-meter dash, and was on the boys 4×400-meter relay team with Noah Blankenship, Kegan Ott, and Sam Petersen that won a league title.

In the girls championships, Emily Roth, a junior, was a four-time winner. She won the 200 and long jump, and was on the 4×200 and 4×400 that won their fourth straight titles along with Julia Lambert, Delanie Driver, and Morgan Miller on the 4×200, and Lambert, M. Miller, and Gwynne Riley on the 4×400.

Sydney Ranzau, a junior, won the pole vault.

“Every year heading into the league meet, I remember coach (John) Downey telling the kids– just make it to fi- nals (or strive to be eighth place or better),” said Dina Gladieux, AHS head coach.

“Even if you have to walk to get that eighth place point in the finals, do it for the team. Every single point counts!

“That tradition has held.

“Prior to the league meet, I tell the kids do everything they can to place.

“Throughout the 2016 season we have had a team word: perseverance. We have stressed with the athletes that perseverance is the quality that allows you to continue working for something even though it is difficult.

“Track is not easy. You have to work for it.

“I can’t say it enough how impressed I am of the display of perseverance from the AHS athletes during the NWOAL meet.

“Out of 17 events, the girls only won five. That means 76 of our 126 points were from places other than first place, making this an incredible combined team effort which makes me so proud.”
