Wagner Named Resident Of The Month At Fairlawn

The December Resident of the Month at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home is James Wagner.

James was born on Dec. 26, 1922, to Clarence and Elma Wagner. He had four siblings, and lived in the Wauseon area.

According to him, he was in downtown Wauseon with a group of young men and saw a group of young women who were window-shopping. All of them chose a girl, and he chose Martha Haas.

They married on June 6, 1942, in Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Wagners made their home in Wauseon, then on Co. Rd. C, where they still have their home. They had four children: Sharon, Delta; Connie, Knoxville, Tenn.; Jim “Butch,” Elkhart, Ind., Montana and Florida; and Debby, who died in 2006.

When the children were young, they went on sightseeing and fishing trips in the U.S. and Canada. Wagner was a farmer who raised 300 cattle every year. He also built a lot of steel barns in the area.

He was a fussy yardman, and enjoyed doing a lot of mowing. He was always interested in the community and in keeping the roadsides clean.

On daily walks, he picked up roadway trash.

In later years, the couple traveled to Montana, Tennessee, Canada, and Alaska. They camped and fished.

Wagner likes to tell about being the chef and feeding his hunting friends in Montana.

Wagner collected miniature John Deere tractors and memorabilia. He saved pennies for his kids. One time, he took a 25 gallon container full of pennies to church for a special offering.

Wagner Street in Wauseon is named after him; he donated the land to provide access to the new Field of Dreams Park.

He came to Fairlawn Haven, April 2007.

He enjoys talking about life experiences.

James and Martha have been married 67 years. His wife visits him almost daily and brings him samples of her homemade pies.
