Veterans Day

Yesterday, Tuesday, was Veterans Day, the day America set aside to honor the men and women who have served their country in the armed forces.

Many times, when we think of Veterans Day, we think of grainy newsreel footage of the first and second World Wars. We think of the long rows of white crosses in American cemeteries in Europe, or of old men wearing their American Legionnaire caps.

We need to remember the many other Americans from different confl icts who deserve our respect and gratitude, as well.

Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars are entering their golden years, or perhaps are graying at the temples. The wars in which they served did not receive the same support of the American people, especially those who were in the military during the Vietnam years.

But they served their country, and deserve the same honor.

Today, young men and women have returned from service in Iraq and Afghanistan. They, too, donned the uniform of their country and traveled to foreign lands, where they, too, were in grave personal danger of the enemy.

Hopefully, this past Veterans Day, and all Veterans Days forward, we honor those who served, no matter where or when.
