Undefeated Season On The Line Thursday

Archbold has a chance to do something it hasn’t done since the 1995-96 season when the Streaks host Swanton, tomorrow, Thursday, in the Thunderdome.

Ranked number one in Division III by the Associated Press from the first week of the season to the last, Archbold will finish the regular season undefeated at 22-0 with a win over the Bulldogs.

If the Streaks are victorious, they’ll join six other boys squads in AHS history to end the regular season undefeated: 1951 (23-1), 1960 (19-1), 1966 (20-1), 1968 (21-1), 1978 (20-1), and 1996 (26-1).

None of those teams won a state championship. The 1996 squad lost its only game of the season in the state final.

The Streaks have also guaranteed themselves at least a share of their 28th Northwest Ohio Athletic League title in school history.

A win over the Bulldogs will give AHS its first outright league title since 2012.

Thursday’s game is also Senior Night. Six players– AJ Mahnke, Andrew Hogrefe,

Jeron Williams, Austin Wiemken, Rigo Ramos, and Travis Ziegler– will play their final game in the Thunderdome.

“The most important thing to me is Senior Night,” said Joe Frank, AHS head coach.

“These guys have done a lot of things for Archbold basketball, and we just hope that we can take them out on a winning note.”
