Tragedy Could Teach Lesson

A tragedy in Sylvania last Thursday should remind everyone about the need for school bus safety.

A 15-year-old freshman girl was dashing across the street to catch her school bus when she was struck and killed by an adult sport-utility driver. News reports say the bus had its stop sign deployed and lights flashing.

Ohio law requires when a bus stops, its red lights turn on and the stop sign comes out, motorists must stop, period. No excuses.

It makes no difference whether you are approaching the bus from the front or back. It does not matter if children are crossing the road in front of the bus, or departing.

Motorists must stop. It’s the law. Motorists privileged to have a driver license are supposed to know driver rules.

Forget the ringing cell phone, stop trying to change the radio station. Forget the GPS, or the errand, or appointment, or picking up the kids. In other words, stop, for the sake of your family and friends.

All too often the police log in this newspaper publishes violators who ignore bus rules, and it’s shuddering, unpleasant news.

Careless motorists who don’t know the laws should be punished severely.

Who are responsible: Drivers, Parents, Teachers, Police?

Get the point?
