Tom Stuckey Right Choice For Northwest State

Northwest State Community College officially recognized what this newspaper has always known. Quoting Eric Fingerhut, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, which oversees Ohio colleges and universities, Stuckey is “the right man, at the right college, at the right time.”

He was officially inaugurated as the sixth president of Northwest State in a ceremony, Thursday, Oct. 16.

Even in the few months Stuckey has been on the job, he is already preparing Northwest State for the future. He has taken steps to make the goal of an NSCC degree easier to obtain and more affordable than ever.

Stuckey and NSCC are pushing forward the idea of classrooms linked by audio and video, allowing students in different locations to learn from the same instructor. The concept, once called “distance learning,” has been around for 20 years. Stuckey and NSCC are putting distance learning to work.

After years on the staff at Northwest State, Stuckey knows the people and history of the college. Such background serves him well as he leads Northwest State and heals some of the wounds left by his predecessor, Betty Young. Stuckey’s soft-spoken, humble, yet firm ways are a refreshing change from Young’s drag-them-along-kicking-and-screaming leadership style.

Northwest State has always been a good college. With Stuckey at the helm, it will become great.
