Lisa Arend, Fulton County economic development director, spoke profoundly in an article in this week’s edition of the Archbold Buckeye
She called today’s economic climate an “unknown world.”
She is correct. The world has never before seen the precise set of circumstances and factors that has brought the international economy to the brink of a near-worldwide meltdown.
There are as many ideas about how we got here, and how to get out, as there are economists.
Who is to blame? Take your pick. Among the villains: Democrats. Republicans. China. Environmentalists. Wall Street tycoons. Illegal aliens. Osama bin Laden.
Unfortunately, a lot is known about this unknown world, and most of it is bad. Essentially, there isn’t enough work for all the people who want, or need, a job.
It is entirely too easy to slip into self-pity and despair. But there’s no time for that.
It’s time to re-tool our workforce. It’s time to retrain citizens in career fields that offer the promise of future employment. Now is the time to create new businesses to serve new industries.
The future is an unknown world, but with hard work, ambition, and perseverance, along with a little help, this unknown world can be conquered.
