The Pettisville boys basketball team, under Greg Nofziger, head coach, returns three letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 17-5 and a perfect 10-0 in the Buckeye Border Conference last season.
Returning is a trio of seniors: Josh Bruner, Alex Frey, and Logan Frey.
L. Frey returns as the lead scorer. He averaged 8.6 points per game last year, followed by 6-foot-5 Bruner, with 3.1 ppg and 2 rebounds per game.
Nofziger said this year’s team lacks size but has good speed and depth.
Depth could be the key for the Blackbirds after losing five to graduation, including Alex Nafziger, who led PHS with 18 ppg. Also graduating were Jared Rohrer-Meck, Chad Rupp, Anthony Giovarelli, and Isaac Weber.
They led the Blackbirds to their fifth consecutive league title and a runner-up finish at district last year.
Looking to contribute this season is a class of juniors: Michael Deffely, Michael Haase, Michael Burkholder, Quinn Nofziger, Lucas Nofziger, Jordan Lemley, Jordan Klopfenstein, Harris King and Jared Avina.
Assistant coaches are Scott Rupp and Lynn Short. Chad Aeschliman is the freshman coach.
Pettisville opens at Delta, Saturday, Nov. 24. The Birds’ home opener is Thursday, Nov. 29 against Hilltop.
