Three Dead After Memorial Day Turnpike Crash

Three people are dead and several others injured after a four-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike about 4:10 pm, Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.

Rich Kilgour, Fulton County Sheriff Department 911 coordinator, said initially, Wauseon Rescue and ALS- 8, the Wauseon-based paramedic unit, were dispatched to the 32-mile marker.

Kilgour said Wauseon crews quickly realized they needed more help, and called for Archbold Rescue and ALS-1.

Dave Davis, Archbold fire chief, said it turned out the crash was actually at the 29.5 milepost. Technically, the crash was in the AFD area of responsibility, but with Wauseon already on scene, they took over command.

Kilgour said within 10 minutes, rescue workers realized more help was needed, so a page went out to Delta Rescue and the Fayette and Morenci fire departments, and helicopter ambulances.

Kilgour said Fayette and Morenci were called for help with extrication.

Photos shown on social media show the westbound lanes blocked by wreckage. Reports say traffic was disrupted for hours.

The Crash

An Ohio State Highway Patrol press release states a semi, driven by Kenneth E. Trowbridge, 29, South Bend, Ind., was traveling east on the toll road when he drove off the left side of the road, through the median, and into the westbound lanes of traffic.

Trowbridge then struck a westbound pickup truck head-on driven by Refugio Elisandro Nunez-Pena, 39, Plymouth, Ind.

Trowbridge, Nunez-Pena, and a passenger in the pickup, Simone D. Nunez, 42, also of Plymouth, were killed.

A 15-year-old who was not identified by OSHP sustained critical injuries and was taken by helicopter to the University of Toledo Medical Center.

A westbound semi, driven by Allen Schlabach, 61, Kill- buck, Ind., was struck in the windshield by debris. Schlabach was not injured.

The box trailer from the Trowbridge semi separated from the tractor and overturned as it continued east.

A car, driven by Isabella Nunez, 18, Plymouth, attempted to swerve off the left side of the road to avoid the trailer, but was struck in the right passenger side.

Isabella Nunez was not hurt, but two passengers in her car, Trevor Fisher, 19, Plymouth, and a nine-yearold juvenile received minor injuries and were taken to UTMC.

Archbold Role

Davis said Archbold Rescue helped extricate victims from the wreckage.

In addition, Archbold Rescue transported one person to the Fulton County Health Center. One patient they helped care for was taken from the scene by air ambulance.

The accident is still under investigation.
