Thefts Continue; Thieves Hit Local Automotive Firm

The string of thefts in Archbold continues, but the thieves are apparently trying for bigger scores.

The most elaborate occurred at the Nobel Automotive factory sometime between 2:30 pm, Saturday, July 11, and 1:30 am, Sunday, July 12.

The Archbold police report states a person or persons forced their way into the building through a window. A window in the break room was open, and the screen had been cut.

Inside, the thieves tore a change machine away from other vending machines, then dragged it onto the factory floor, where they used a fork lift to ram it against a wall.

Martin Schmidt, Archbold police chief, said the job netted the thieves less than $500 in cash.

Sometime between 5 pm, Friday, July 10 and 8:30 am July 12, thieves broke into four vans owned by Maumee Valley Vending, which were parked in the Oberhaus Enterprises complex, 1026 S. Defiance St.

The side windows were broken to gain access.

The vans each carry safes; the safes were damaged. Schmidt said the thieves made off with a small amount of cash.

Thieves also forced into the Deedra Smith residence, 315 Bankey Ave., sometime between 10 am, Sunday, July 12 and 6:16 pm, Tuesday, July 14. The police report states entrance was made by forcing a rear door.

Inside, they stole a television set worth $150.

Schmidt said Archbold police officers are working on the thefts, but declined to elaborate.
