Teacher Contract Talks Underway At Archbold

David Deskins, Archbold Area School District superintendent, said Monday contract talks are underway with the Archbold Education Association on a new master contract.

The AEA represents the school district teachers and other certified staffers in labor negotiations with the school board.

“Dialogue has begun, and discussions have been positive,” Deskins said.

Contracts talks between the school board and the AEA have not always gone smoothly.

Talks between the two sides over a wage reopener clause started in April 2007. The negotiations were suspended during the summer of 2007, restarting that fall.

A federal mediator was called in Oct. 28, 2007, but the effort failed.

The board and AEA negotiating team reached a tentative agreement in October 2007. The AEA rank and file rejected that contract in a vote on Nov. 1, 2007.

The school board said the two sides had reached impasse on Nov. 20. The negotiations were headed for the State Employment Relations Board fact-finding process, with a first hearing set for Feb. 27, 2008.

But the day before the hearing, the school board ratified an agreement that granted a 6.25% raise in base pay over the period of Aug. 1, 2007, through July 31, 2010.

The AEA membership approved the agreement Feb. 20, 2008.–David Pugh
