Sunshine Week About You, Information, Secrets

It is Sunshine Week, a weeklong celebration and call to action to support open government at the local, state, and national level. Sunshine Week is a project of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and other information groups.

It isn’t just about newspapers or other media. It’s about you, and your right to know what your government is doing in your name, with your money. It’s about everything from a local government agency denying a reporter’s request for the monthly financial report, to the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. It’s about secrets: who gets to keep them, and who doesn’t.

We are fortunate in our area. Reporter requests for information are answered. Sometimes a government offi- cial may not like releasing information, but he or she realizes that even when the information is embarrassing, it’s better to share it with the people than try to hide it.

For a democracy to operate properly, a free flow of information is required, good and bad. An open government is the best government.
