Brian Ziegler opened his first season as head coach of the Blue Streaks with a victory when Archbold defeated Edgerton 61- 55, Saturday, Nov. 29, in a nonleague girls basketball contest at AHS.
“This was a nice victory to open the season,” said the coach. “The girls did a nice job down the stretch hitting key free throws to seal the victory.”
Archbold sprinted to a 12-4 advantage in the first period before Kelly Thiel, Edgerton head coach, called time-out halfway through the quarter.
Stacy Wyse scored under the basket to widen the gap to 14-4, but then the Bulldogs began a comeback that closed the difference to 18-14 at the end of one.
The second quarter stayed close. Archbold outscored Edgerton 17-16 to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room.
Both teams scored 10 points in the third period, and AHS took a 45-40 advantage into the final quarter. Dani Leaser scored six of the 10 in less than a minute midway through the period.
Archbold upped the different to nine, 51-42, with 5:59 left. Edgerton closed to within two, 55-53, with 1:11 remaining, but the Streaks hit six of six foul shots in the final 38 seconds to seal the six-point 61-55 victory.
Devin Newman led AHS with 15 points, followed by Leaser with 14.
Jayma Nihart led EHS with 20.
Archbold out-rebounded the Bulldogs 30-28, and were led by Leaser with six. The Streaks committed three fewer turnovers, 18, to Edgerton’s 21.
The Streaks also won the junior varsity contest, 38-34.
