The Blue Streaks went on the road Friday, Sept. 25, to Swanton for its final tuneup before facing Wauseon this Friday at Archbold for an outright Northwest Ohio Athletic League title.

There was no slow start or sloppy play as the Streaks jumped out to a 21-0 lead and cruised to a 45-7 win.

“That was the one thing we challenged our guys with all week long,” said David Dominique, AHS head coach.

“I think we kinda started slow the last couple of weeks for whatever reason. We got a good stop right away, and the offense started clicking.

No Looking Back

Archbold kicked off, and it only took three plays to get on the scoreboard when Caleb Hogrefe picked off a Trent Weigel pass and took it 24 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

The Streaks scored on their five offensive series in the first half to lead 42-0.

DJ Newman did most of the damage, rushing for touchdowns of 6, 48, and 7 yards and throwing a 27- yard touchdown pass to Brandon Taylor.

Noah Gomez added a 40- yard rushing touchdown.

Archbold’s only miscue was a fumble before the end of the first half that could have led to another scoring chance.

In the second half, Archbold had another mercy rule running clock and inserted the reserves early.

Archbold moved the ball to the Swanton 3 before settling for a 20-yard Krayton Kern field goal for a 45-0 lead in the third quarter.

Swanton scored in the fourth on a 2-yard Nate Vance run.

They were the first points given up by the AHS defense since the second game of the year against Liberty Center.

“I think tonight that interception got us going,” said Dominique. “We made their quarterback feel uncomfortable. We got a lot of pressure on him, and as a quarterback that’s not fun.

“A lot of things were working and a lot of guys were contributing.

“It’s always fun and it’s good to get the young guys in the game to get some game experience on a Friday night.”

Archbold rushed for 313 yards and racked up 410 total yards while holding the Bulldogs to just 74 total yards, its third straight game holding an opponent under 100 yards.

Newman rushed seven times for 101 yards and three touchdowns while going 8-10 passing for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Gomez chipped in 89 yards on seven attempts with a touchdown.

Antonio Cruz snagged five receptions for 52 yards.

League Title On Line

For the second straight year, Archbold and Wauseon meet with the NWOAL title on the line, with both teams sporting 5-0 records.

The Streaks are ranked fifth in Division VI in the latest Associated Press poll. The Indians are ranked 15th in Div. IV.

After reclaiming the Lions Club trophy in 2017 with a 24-21 win, Archbold outscored the Indians 73-7 in their last two meetings, winning 35-7 in 2018 and 38-0 last season.

“It’s tough to not look ahead, but I think our kids did a pretty good job not looking ahead to Wauseon,” said Dominique.

“If you want to be a good football team you have to beat your rival.

“They are a really good football team. It’s one of those things we have tried to ingrain in our kids.

“This is a big week for us, and we just have to have a great week of preparation.”
