Archbold’s first win of the season couldn’t have come at a better time.

It was a perfect fall night for football when Evergreen came rolling into town, Friday, Oct. 10.

As Archbold graduates came back to their alma mater to celebrate the 60th Homecoming of AHS, the football team celebrated after a 63-33 Northwest Ohio Athletic League victory.

The Streaks improved to 1-6, 1-4 NWOAL.

The Vikings slipped to 2-5, 1-4 NWOAL.

“We really needed that win,” said Bryan Miller, AHS head coach.

“We played well from the get-go, and I told the guys I was really happy for them. It’s been a long season; there have been a lot of bumps in the road.

“The kids played well, and we got that monkey off our back. With three weeks left we want to keep getting better and finish the season strong.”

The 99 combined points is the second-most combined points scored in a game. The Streaks and Montpelier met in 2013 and combined for 120 points.

It wasn’t just team points that were put up. Derek Walker led the ground game, rushing for 270 yards on 19 carries and scoring six touchdowns.

Walker’s 270 rushing yards put him third on the all-time AHS list for most yards in a game.

Tim Grieser holds the first two spots, rushing for 338 yards against Northwood in 1970 and 302 yards against Montpelier the same year.

The six touchdowns in one game tied Walker with Jake Fidler on the all-time list. Fidler rushed for six touchdowns against Evergreen in 2008.

With the ground game clicking on all cylinders the passing game wasn’t needed, but Walker also tossed a touchdown pass to Garrett Grime for Grime’s first receiving touchdown, a 24-yard strike in the fourth quarter.

Levi Wyse also busted off two long touchdown runs of 45 and 64 yards in the first half.

Wyse finished with 142 yards on 14 carries.

The Archbold defense shut out Evergreen in the first 12 minutes.

The Vikings, led by signal caller Nick Etue, tallied 14 points in the second but trailed Archbold 28-14 at halftime.

Etue completed 18-34 passes for 256 yards and rushed for 109 yards on 23 carries, scoring three touchdowns.
