Elmwood jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead and never gave it up as the Royals defeated Archbold 5-2 in a Division III regional softball semifinal at Ashland, Thursday, May 29.
Archbold scored in the second inning for a 3-1 deficit, and Dani Newman hit a home run in the fourth to seemingly close to within one run. But she was called out after a time-out because the umpire said she didn’t touch home plate.
The Streaks scored a run in the fifth for a 3-2 deficit, but Elmwood came back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run for a 5-2 lead that held.
Archbold finished its season with a 21-7 record and was co-champion of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League with Evergreen.
Third-ranked Elmwood (27-1), led by pitcher Brittany Dauterman (21-0) faces Colonel Crawford (24-5) in the regional final, Saturday, May 31, 12 noon at Ashland.
Colonel Crawford defeated Sugarcreek Garaway (21-7) 3-1 in the other regional semifinal at Ashland on Wednesday, May 28.–Posted 5.29, 10:55 p.m.
