Archbold scored 251 points to finish fourth at the Marion Elgin Invitational, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15, at the Marion Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Olentangy Liberty won the 25-team tournament with 278.5 points. Ashland Crestview was second with 269.5, and Jonathan Alder was third with 261.5. In Jeopardy
According to The Marion Star newspaper, the tournament was in jeopardy last fall.
The past couple of years the Ohio Athletic Committee held its state junior high and grade school tournaments at the Marion Coliseum. The OAC allowed Marion Elgin to use its mats and portable scoreboards for its invitational, and in return, Elgin provided workers for the OAC tournaments.
But the OAC decided to change locations this year, taking its equipment with it.
All Elgin had were two mats and one portable scoreboard. According to the Star, the tournament needs eight mats and scoreboards for more than 1,200 matches.
The Elgin athletic director called Marion Harding, River
Valley, and Pleasant– the other schools in the county with wrestling programs. All agreed to bring mats, scoreboards, and workers, and the tournament got underway on schedule. Individual Results
Jordan Cowell (145 pounds) was Archbold’s only individual champion.
Ben Eggers (103 lbs.), Austin Ripke (152 lbs.), and Tyler Rufenacht (160 lbs.) each finished fourth.
Brandon Dennie (285 lbs.) was fifth; Logan Day (119 lbs.) placed sixth; and Kenny Price (130 lbs.) was seventh.
TJ Weirauch (125 lbs.), Oliver Stuckey (135 lbs.), and Jacob Strong (215 lbs.) each finished eighth.
