Staggered Starts For Archbold, Pettisville Schools

Students at Archbold and Pettisville schools will go through a “staggered start” plan for the opening of the 2020-21 school year.

Under the staggered start, only certain grade levels will attend school on certain days.

Archbold

In the case of Archbold Elementary School, preschool, first and third graders start Wednesday, Aug. 19, the originally scheduled first day of school.

Preschool, second and fourth grade students start Thursday, Aug. 20.

With the exception of kindergarten, students will not have school, Friday, Aug. 21.

Kindergarten students will attend their first three days of school by appointment, Wednesday-Friday, Aug. 19- 21. The appointment schedule was mailed to parents earlier.

At the Monday, Aug. 10 meeting of the Archbold School Board, Jayson Selgo, superintendent, said on Friday, Aug. 21, school staff will meet and look at the procedures that were put in place. At that time, they can make any necessary changes.

In the staggered start schedule posted on the Arch- bold Schools website (archbold. k12.oh.us), school officials state, “This process will allow families, students, and school employees the opportunity for an acclimation period, after being removed from the traditional school setting for nearly five months.

“The staggered start schedule allows students and staff the best opportunity for a safe return to school.”

Regular school attendance starts Monday, Aug. 24.

At the middle school, the first day for fifth and seventh graders is Wednesday, Aug. 19. Sixth and eighth graders start on Thursday, Aug. 20.

AHS freshmen and sophomores have their first day on Wednesday. Juniors and seniors start Thursday, Aug. 20.

Pettisville

Pettisville students will also observe a staggered start schedule, with a twist, said Ken Boyer, interim superintendent.

Half of the grades will attend on Wednesday, Aug. 19, followed by the other half on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Like Archbold, Friday, Aug. 21, will be an in-service day for staff, with no students in attendance.

Then, on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 24-25, half of the grade levels will be in each day.

Regular attendance starts Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Boyer said the district steering committee on reopening met Monday, Aug. 10, and decided to go with the staggered start.

He said the decision was made because, “there are so many questions, starting with all the new requirements we have with students with masks, and the different schedules and the new things these students are going to be experiencing along with our staff.

“It just gives us an opportunity to have fewer students in the first couple of days and get them oriented to the new procedures, as well as getting our staff oriented to that.

“We think that’s going to give us a little more time to make for just a better and smoother start” to the school year.

Boyer said Mike Lane, high school principal, and Jason Waldvogel, elementary principal, were working on their staggered start schedule on Monday.

It will be released as soon as it’s complete, he said.
