Snow Removal Law Necessary

Archbold Village Council discussed an unpopular issue during its Monday, Jan. 19 meeting- removing snow from residential sidewalks.

Archbold must be a walkable community; citizens must be able to get anywhere on foot, bicycle, or handicapped scooter. Citizens need not rely on motor vehicles to travel a walkable distance.

During heavy snowfalls, sidewalks must be cleared; all avenues of transportation, not just streets and highways, must be clear. Property owners must do the job, and council must find a way to enact, and enforce, an ordinance requiring walks be shoveled.

A clear sidewalks ordinance must be enforced, just as stop bars, speed limits, and traffic signals are enforced.

Clearing sidewalks in front of every home is part of community living. Shovel it, sweep it, kick it off with your shoes; the sidewalks must be clear, and kept clear.

Anyone lucky enough to own property in Archbold can keep their sidewalks clear, either by doing it themselves, or paying a vendor for the work.

It is good to see council finally waking up to the need to maintain an alternate mode of transportation, something besides the automobile.

Quit stalling. Get it done.
