Kinsey Smith, an Archbold senior, placed third in the floor exercise with a score of 9.5 at the state gymnastics meet, Saturday, March 2, in Hilliard.
“Third place on floor was definitely a great accomplishment,” said Tim Price, her coach. “Looking back at the competition, the girls from the Cleveland area compete not only in high school gymnastics, but also club gymnastics.
“To finish 9.5 between a 9.7 and 9.6 routine is a great accomplishment, but the position we were going into floor left an opportunity for Kinsey to split that first- and second-place floor routine.
“We talked about it and prepared for it if the opportunity presented itself.
“I think the disappointment on (uneven parallel) bars closed that opportunity somewhat. I think if we hit the bar routine she was capable of, she would not only have won bars but possibly won floor.
“Going into the meet, I felt bars was an event that she could have most easily been at the top of the podium.”
Smith scored an 8.6 in uneven parallel bars, out of the running for a medal. The winner, Breaksville-Broadview Height’s Alecia Farina, scored a 9.4.
“I could not have asked for a better way to end my gymnastics career,” said Smith.
“Although I had a disappointing end on bars, I knew I still had one last chance to go out there and give it my all.”
