Seven Back For Phs Baseball

The Pettisville baseball season was scheduled to open its season yesterday, Tuesday, with a Buckeye Border Conference contest at Montpelier.

Paul Bishop, returning for his 14th season as head coach, said, “our team has been working hard and has been showing improvement every day in practice.”

The Blackbirds finished 8- 12, 6-6 in the BBC last year. They lost to Hicksville 3-0 in the Division IV sectional finals.

Lost to graduation were Dillon King, Landon Roth, and Justin Rupp.

Back are seniors Austin Horning (Honorable Mention All-BBC, out for the season due to injury), Logan Rufenacht (Second Team All- BBC), and Devin Beltz; and sophomores Brayden Barrett, Josh Horning, Jake King, and Tommy McWatters.

“Logan and Tommy and Brayden will anchor the infield at second base, third base, and catcher, respectively,” said Bishop.

“In the outfield, Devin will provide experience in one of the corner outfield spots, and Josh will cover a lot of ground in center field.

“Pitching depth will need to be an area of major growth for us this year.

“Logan (32 innings pitched) and Josh (nine innings pitched) are our two most experienced returning pitchers.

“We will need to have some underclassmen step up to provide quality innings on the mound.

“Overall experience will also be a factor, as we will only have two seniors on the field. The rest will be underclassmen.”

Assisting with coaching duties is John Horning.
