A semi trailer loaded with garbage caught fire Tuesday, Feb. 9, said Andy Brodbeck, Archbold fire chief.
AFD firefighters were called about 5:49 pm on a report of a semi trailer fire at the ARS, Inc. transfer station parking lot.
At the transfer station, garbage trucks that make residential refuse pickups unload their contents. The garbage is then loaded on semi trailers for transport to the Williams County Landfill.
Brodbeck said when firefighters arrived, they discovered garbage at the front of the trailer had caught fire and burned through the tarp on top of the steel-sided trailer.
Flames were showing 10 to 12 feet above the top of the trailer, Brodbeck said.
Firefighters used hoses from one of their fire engines to extinguish the blaze. The tanker truck provided extra water.
He put the total amount of water used to fight the fire at 2,500 gallons.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Damage to the trailer was estimated at $1,000.
