School District Finances Better

M K

Everyone in the Archbold Area School District- board members, administrators, teachers, support staff members, students, voters, and taxpayers- has done incredible work.

Two years ago, the district’s financial forecast was looking grim. Expenses were exceeding revenues, and cash reserves were low. Twice, voters turned down a nearly 10-mill levy.

Everybody involved rolled up their sleeves and attacked the problem. Employees made insurance concessions.

Expenditures were cut. Voters approved a new, smaller levy. Seven district employees took early retirement; others left on their own.

The result today is the school district’s five-year forecast is in the black, on the positive side of the ledger, until 2011.

Everyone worked together to turn the district around. And everyone deserves a hearty pat on the back.

But black ink on the ledger does not mean it’s time to open the money faucet. There are too many unanswered questions about the future. State support is drying up, and the levy, passed in November 2006, will expire in 2011.

The school board must continue to monitor expenses and find ways to cut without injuring education. It’s a tough job that must be accomplished.

Just as homeowners need to skimp and save to live within their means, so must the school district.

Flush, plush times are over in America, and Archbold.
