In two separate meetings, Archbold School Board approved several personnel-related matters.
The board approved paying those who had received supplemental contracts for spring at reduced rates at a special meeting, Wednesday, May 13.
The payouts were part of a memorandum of understanding between the board and the Archbold Education Association, which represents district teachers and other certified personnel in labor negotiations with the board.
When Mike DeWine, Ohio governor, ordered schools closed in March, and eventually cancelled the remainder of in-classroom instruction for the 2019-20 school year, events such as spring sports and the high school musical were cancelled.
Supplemental contracts that will be paid at 75% of the original amounts were approved for the musical director and musical director assistant, musical assistants (two contracts), and junior class advisors (two contracts).
Payments at 60% of the original contract amounts were approved for the head boys tennis coach, head baseball coach, assistant baseball coaches (two contracts), freshman baseball coach, head softball coach, assistant softball coaches (two contracts), head track coach, assistant track coaches (three contracts), seventh and eighth-grade track coaches (four contracts), arts and art show 1 (three contracts), elementary musical, and junior high trip coordinator.
The memorandum of understanding between the school board and AEA states the payment amounts “recognize that individuals have already completed a portion of their duties, even if it was not completed in full.”
In a prepared statement read at the board meeting, Jayson Selgo, superintendent, commended Rob Mahnke, AEA president, and the members of the group “for recognizing the financial impact of this pandemic on our community and school district.
“This is another example of how fortunate our district is to have selfless individuals on our coaching staffs and leading our extracurricular programs.
“This joint effort between the association and the board is a savings of $30,530.95 to the school board.”
At its Monday, May 18 regular meeting, school board approved several personnel actions.
Resignations for Garrett Grime and Cash Gericke as assistant football coaches were approved, with an effective date of April 15.
The two were then approved as volunteer football coaches for the 2020-21 school year.
A previous motion approving Jacob Elting as a volunteer football coach was amended to reflect Elting receiving 50% of a one-year supplemental contract as a high school football coach for the 2020-21 school year.
The board also amended a previous motion approving Cody Ruffer for a one-year supplemental contract as an assistant football coach, to reflect his receiving 50% of a one-year supplemental contract for 2020-21.
The board also approved Josh Voll as a technology assistant for up to 160 hours for the summer.
Board members spent about 50 minutes behind closed doors in executive session.
Stated reason for the executive session was “to discuss the employment, compensation, promotion or demotion of public employees.”
The board took no action when it returned to regular session.
The next meeting is Monday, June 22, 4:30 pm, in the AHS media center.
