School Board, Teachers Meet, But No Contract

The Archbold Area School Board and the membership of the Archbold Education Association met Thursday, Nov. 1, without a new contract.

The AEA represents the teachers and professional staff in labor negotiations with the school board.

The school board met in the Archbold High School lecture hall and went into executive session for the purpose of contract negotiations at 7:30 am Thursday. The membership of the AEA was invited into executive session.

The board recessed at 7:45 am, and moved from the lecture hall to the media center. The teachers stayed in the lecture hall, breaking up about 15 minutes later.

Ben Gericke, president of the AEA, met with board members again in executive session until about 8:48 am. The board returned to regular session and adjourned at 8:55 am.

David Deskins, school district superintendent, and Gericke would not discuss what went on during the meeting.

When asked about a teaching contract, Deskins said, “Negotiations are ongoing. We continue to work towards resolution.”

In an email to this newspaper, Gericke shared similar sentiments.

The two sides are negotiating a salary reopener clause in the master contract, which runs from 2006 through 2009.

Negotiations began in the Spring of 2007; Deskins said the two sides agreed not to meet during the summer.- David Pugh
