School Board Buys Bus, Approves Personnel Actions

The Archbold Area School Board approved the purchase of a new school bus and several personnel actions at its Monday, Aug. 26 meeting.

Aaron Rex, superintendent, said the board received one bid from Cardinal Bus for an 84-passenger transit “snub nose” bus. The cost of the vehicle is $88,557.

Rex said bus No. 20, the oldest bus in the fleet, was traded in on the new bus. The district received a $2,700 allowance for the old one.

Delivery of the new bus is expected in late September or early October. It has been designated No. 8.

Money to buy the bus came from the permanent improvement fund.

The board also approved a memorandum of understanding between itself and the Archbold Education Association concerning teacher retirement funds.

The AEA represents district teachers in labor negotiations with the school board.

Rex said under the contract with the AEA, the school district agrees to fund a portion of a teacher’s retirement costs. This is known as a “retirement pickup” because the board is “picking up” a share of the cost.

Rex said the state of Ohio has changed the rules for teacher retirements. The teacher’s share of the retirement will increase 1% per year, he said.

The memorandum continues the district pickup at the same level. It does not represent a cost increase to the district, Rex said.

The board also approved several personnel actions.
