Rodger L. (“Rod”) Frey, age 41 years, of Durham, N.C., and formerly of Archbold, passed away unexpectedly on March 10, 2016, at Coldwater, Mich.
He was born July 15, 1974, in Wauseon, the son of Roger “Butch” and Sharon (Schooley) Frey.
A 1992 graduate of Archbold High School and 1996 graduate of Goshen (Ind.) College, he moved to North Carolina as a Ph.D. candidate in the Literature Department of Duke University with a focus on new media and film.
He also taught classes at Duke and worked on various new media projects with organizations based in North Carolina.
Rod enjoyed literature, films, web design and related new media activities, philosophy, camping, fantasy sports, live music concerts and festivals, trivia, and following Cleveland sports teams.
He reveled in conversing and laughing for hours with friends and family and spending time with his toddler nephew.
He made friends everywhere he went. He was funny, generous and kind, and his home was always open to those in difficult circumstances whether he knew them well or not.
He will be forever missed by all his friends and family.
He is survived by his parents, Roger “Butch” and Sharon Frey of Archbold; his sister, Joy Frey of Evanston, Ill.; his brother-in-law, Augusto San Martin; his beloved nephew, Lyon Frey-San Martin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elias and Katherine Frey, and Basil “Dutch” and Velma Schooley.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Zion Mennonite Church in Archbold.
