Ridgeville Park Needs Playground Equipment

Of the 28 surveys returned to the Ridgeville Township Park Board, the majority of respondents said the park needs playground equipment.

The board met Tuesday, May 13, to tabulate results from the survey, which previously had been sent to residents.

Jayma Gobrogge, park board secretary, said, “A lot of people commented that they appreciated what the board was doing to get a park in Ridgeville,” she said.

The board, established by a vote of Ridgeville Township residents, is working to create a park on Co. Rd. X, next to Christ Community Church. The land was part of the former Ridgeville School, and later Archbold Middle School, before the church bought the building. The church has agreed to donate the land to the park board.

Other items named in the survey included a shelter, restrooms, a walking-fitness trail, and a basketball or multi-use court

The information will be sent to Anderson Recreational Design so a park design can be completed in time for the Ridgeville Corners garage sales, set for the second week of June.

Fund Raising

The board’s fund-raising committee has decided to participate in the garage sale by hosting a sale at the church. The committee is seeking donations of “gently used items” for the sale.

The board had determined it needs $65,000 to develop the park, plus $3,000 per year for annual expenses.

Gobrogge said the board could ask voters for a property tax levy to raise the necessary money, “but that’s not the route we wish to go.”

She said there is grant money available, but many of the grants require a local matching grant. When the board raises some money, it will have money available for the local grant.

Gobrogge said the church still owns the property and has agreed to hold onto the land until the park board is able financially to take it over.

However, she said many Ridgeville children are going to the lot to play, and are already referring to the site as “the park.”

“The kids are really excited about the idea of a park,” she said.- David Pugh
