Prostitution Sting Nets 10 Arrests

The Fulton County Sheriff Department conducted a prostitution sting operation at Arrowhead Motel, Wauseon that resulted in the arrests of 10 men, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 15 and 16.

“We had intelligence information indicating there was prostitution occurring in the turnpike exit area” near Wauseon, said Darrell Merillat, Fulton County Sheriff.

There are three motels and a truck stop at Exit 34, the Ohio Turnpike interchange at St. Rt. 108.

He said some information came from confidential informants.

Based on that information, the sheriff department launched a sting operation.

An ad for sexual activity was placed on the Internet. Arrangements were made for an undercover female officer to meet men at the Arrowhead Motel.

Merillat said the motel owners cooperated with the operation.

“They’re good people,” he said.

The suspects met the female officer in one room; in a nearby room, FCSD deputies waited until negotiations were complete before they moved in and arrested the suspects.

Arrested were:

•James T. Cole, 29, Lyons

•Curtiss W. Cotterell, 35, Holland

•Carrol Franklin Eaton, 50, Waldron, Mich.

•Ryan P. Gallagher, 30, Perrysburg

•Robert F. Hadley, 65, Sylvania

•Ricky L. Hall, 53, Defiance

•Kevin R. Korn, 37, Toledo

•Paul L. Onweller, 43, Swanton

•Joseph S. Preventowski, 51, Temperance, Mich.

•Todd L. Stricklen, 36, Oregon.

All were charged with soliciting, a misdemeanor charge. None resisted arrest.

Merillat said all 10 men were issued summonses to appear in court rather than go to jail. By issuing summonses, Merillat said the FCSD saves money by not running up jail fees. About 1,200 in cash, plus other items, were seized from the suspects.

Of those arrested, FCSD records indicate five were married, three were single, and one was divorced. There was no information about one man’s marital status.

Merillat said he was surprised by the number of men who responded to the offer over the Internet in a relatively short time.

Overall, Merillat said he was pleased with the operation.
