Police Step Up Seat Belt Enforcement

Martin Schmidt, Archbold police chief, said Archbold officers will increase traffic enforcement during the National Click It or Ticket campaign, May 18-31.

“We will put more effort into traffic enforcement,” Schmidt said.

Officers will particularly be on the lookout for violators of Ohio seat belt law.

Schmidt said Archbold motorists have a ways to go to comply with the law. People need to have their seat belts fastened anytime they are in a vehicle.

Using seat belts can save lives and reduce injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator estimated that in 2007, 15,147 lives were saved by the use of seat belts. That same year, more than 14,000 persons who died in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts.

In Ohio during 2007, NHTSA statistics indicate eight persons age five and up died in motor vehicle crashes in Fulton County. Of those, 63% were not wearing seat belts.

That works out to 11.75 persons killed in auto mishaps while not wearing seatbelts per 100,000 population.

That ranks Fulton County 10th among Ohio’s 88 counties; but Henry County had 17.28, ranking fifth.

Defiance County had 10.38 unrestrained deaths per 100,000; Williams County, 2.61.

Overall, Ohio had an unrestrained deaths per 100,000 figure of 4.54.
