PHS Volleyball Wins Tri-Match With PH, Columbus Grove

The Pettisville volleyball team opened its season on a winning note, defeating Patrick Henry and Columbus Grove in a tri-match in the Bird Cage, Saturday, Aug. 28.

The Birds defeated the Patriots 25-21, 13-25, 25-23 in the opening match.

Pettisville finished the day with a 25-15, 19-25, 25- 16 victory over the Bulldogs.

The Blackbirds were 52/58 in serving, and were led by Tessa Yoder, Katie Yoder, and Laura Rupp with two aces each. Rupp was 14/15 in serving, while K. Yoder was 11/12.

Stephanie Yoder led PHS in serve reception; she was 23/26. K. Yoder was 12/15. As a team, the Birds were 51/61.

T. Yoder was 27/28 in setting, followed by Rupp, who was 26/26.

K. Yoder and Natalie Hubby each had eight kills. K. Yoder was 15/17, while Hubby was 14/17. The team was 58/71 in attacks.

S. Yoder had three blocks.

The Blackbird junior varsity won 25-18, 25-3.

K. Yoder led the PHS attack with 12 of the team’s 30 kills. Hubby had eight.

Serving aces were K. Yoder, S. Yoder, Rupp, Lauren Frey, and Kate Nofziger.

Rupp was 36/38 in setting; T. Yoder was 29/29.

As a team, Pettisville was 56/68 in serving, 37/44 in serve reception, 75/79 in setting, and 68/84 in attacks.

Columbus Grove won the JV contest, 25-12, 25-16.

“It was a good start to the season against two solid teams in PH and Columbus Grove,” said John Horning, PHS coach.

“We definitely have some things to work on but we worked really hard, played tough defense and attacked well at the net.”
