John Horning, Pettisville volleyball coach, welcomes back six letterwinners from a squad that finished 19-3 last season.

The Birds won the Buckeye Border Conference with a 9-1 record. It was their first BBC title since 2002.

Five of the six letterwinners are seniors: Adi Bruner, Lauren Frey, Natalie Hubby, Kate Nofziger, and Laura Rupp. Katie Yoder, a junior, is the sixth letterwinner.

The team lost four to graduation: Kylee Garcia, Stacey King, Stephanie Yoder, and Tessa Yoder.

With five senior letterwinners returning, Horning said his team’s strengths include experience, serving and defense. A weakness is that younger players will have to fill in at the varsity level.

“I believe we should be competitive in all our matches, and will look to our experienced seniors for strong leadership and direction,” said Horning.

As far as a league outlook, Horning said, “We should compete at a high level in a well-balanced league this year.”

Assisting with coaching duties are Rebecca Dorosz and Tim Myers, junior varsity coach.

The Birds open the season with a tri-match against Patrick Henry and Columbus Grove at PHHS, Saturday, Aug. 27.

The first home game for Pettisville, which will be played in the new gymnasium, is Thursday, Sept. 1, against Ayersville.
