PHS Holds Off Edon In Semifinals

Pettisville took to the court, Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Swanton for the Division IV boys basketball sectional semifinals.

The Birds’ opponent was a familiar foe: Edon.

Pettisville (8-15) defeated the Blue Bombers twice this season, but anything can happen in the tournament.

It was a quick start for Edon, jumping out to a 12- 3 lead midway through the first quarter.

Stuart Yoder, who had been plagued by a high ankle sprain, came off the bench to give PHS a spark, scoring the next eight Pettisville points to cut the gap.

The first quarter ended with a Gabe Beck free throw as Edon led 14-12.

Edon led by five points early in the second before Pettisville scored six straight points on layups by Beck, Caleb Rychener and Dillon King for their first lead, 20- 19.

Three free throws reclaimed the lead for Edon, but Beck knotted the score with another layup, and the half ended with the teams tied at 22.

After Edon hit a free throw, Beck gave PHS the lead back with a layup for a 24-23 advantage.

The Bombers answered with a three-pointer.

Baskets by Rychener and Beck were followed by another Edon trey, but Pettisville scored the next five points for a 33-29 advantage.

Edon scored on a desperation shot at the end of the period to cut the difference to 33-31 going into the final period.

The teams traded baskets to start the fourth.

Pettisville came back with a Beck free throw and two Evan King free throws to take a 38-36 lead.

After an Edon time-out, the Birds put on a full-court press that led to three turnovers and baskets from Justin Rupp, Beck and D. King, giving Pettisville a little breathing room at 44-36.

Edon scored the next four points to cut the difference to 44-40, but a Beck layup and two E. King free throws gave Pettisville an eightpoint cushion.

After an Edon layup, Rupp sealed the game with two free throws and a layup after a steal for the 52-42 semifinal victory.

Beck led all scorers with 15 points. Rupp netted 10, while Rychener had four blocks.

Jim Peckham scored 13 points for Edon (4-19).

Pettisville was out-rebounded

27-25 but had only nine turnovers to Edon’s 14.
