PHS Golfers Win Two




The Pettisville golf team broke its eight-match losing streak and finished the week of Sept. 10 with two wins and two losses.

Holgate came to Wauseon’s golf course, Monday, Sept. 10, with hopes of bettering its 1- 9 record against the winless Blackbirds. A strong five-man effort dashed the Tigers’ hopes as Pettisville won its first match of the season.

Senior Logan Frey led the Blackbirds, and all other golfers, with a 44. Dylan Weirauch, freshman, and Andrew Rupp, junior, contributed 50s. Jared Avina, junior, 51, as Pettisville tied Holgate’s top four scores with a team score of 195.

The match was decided by the fifth man’s score. Pettisville claimed the victory when Josh Bruner’s 52 beat Holgate’s fifth man’s 53.

NC 172, PHS 210

The Blackbirds were on the road to Montpelier, Tuesday, Sept. 11, to face Buckeye Border Conference rival North

Central.

Pettisville came up short, 172-210, losing its third BBC match of the year.

North Central’s Matt Manival shot a 40 to lead all golfers. Frey had a 45 to lead the Blackbirds.

Tinora 185, PHS 210, Hilltop 217

Tinora hosted a tri-match, Thursday, Sept. 13 at Defiance with BBC rivals Pettisville and Hilltop in a non-league clash. The Blackbirds split the day, losing to Tinora 185-210 but beating Hilltop 210-217.

Avina paced PHS with a 50 on the back nine. Frey shot a 52.

“I am just glad to get that first victory,” said Ed Bracken, Pettisville coach. “They work so hard.

“I feel good about the team’s improvement, and hope we can carry it over to Friday’s (Sept. 21) BBC tournament. Stryker is the favorite, but if we continue to play better we might be able to sneak up the leader board.”
