PHS Boys Fall To Ottawa Hills; Beat Hilltop, Patrick Henry

The Pettisville boys basketball team improved to 5- 4, 3-0 in the Buckeye Border Conference with wins over Hilltop and Patrick Henry and a loss at Ottawa Hills.

The Birds traveled to Ottawa Hills, Friday, Dec. 28, and came home with a 74-49 loss.

The Green Bears led 28-12 after one period and 42-22 at the half. They extended the gap to 65-35 after three, and Pettisville won the fourth quarter 14-9.

David Reyes led PHS with 19 points. Kurt Siegel and Austin Dykstra each scored 10.

Ottawa Hills hit nine three-pointers while Pettisville hit four.

PHS 60, Hilltop 34

Pettisville hosted Hilltop, Thursday, Jan. 3, for a BBC matchup. The Birds took control in the first period and went on to a 60-34 victory.

With Pettisville leading 8-7 in the first period, Reyes hit a pair of free throws, and scored on a layup after a steal. Jacob Valdez scored off an offensive rebound for a 14-7 lead, and Hilltop called for a time-out.

Siegel stole the ball and drove the court for a layup for a 16-7 advantage.

Brandon Willis hit one of two free throws for Hilltop, followed by a traditional three-pointer by Joey Mohr.

Reyes hit two foul shots with 7.3 seconds remaining, and the Birds took an 18-11 lead into the second period.

After Valdez opened the second period with a bucket, Willis scored for Hilltop with 6:41 left in the first half.

The Birds went on a 12- 0 run on baskets by Siegel, Dominic Frey, Korben Rychener, Dykstra, Reyes, and Siegel again for a 32-13 lead with 3:15 left in the half.

Erik Stipe finally broke Hilltop’s drought with a pair at the charity stripe with 2:29 left in the second period.

Reyes hit a traditional three, Stipe hit a pair at the foul line, and Tanner Rufenacht hit one of two free throws for PHS for the 36-17 halftime score.

The Birds widened the gap to 51-24 after three before they were outscored 10-9 in the final period for the 60-34 final.

Reyes led all scorers with 15 points. Siegel was also in double figures, with 13.

Willis and Payne Sentle each scored 10 for Hilltop.

PHS 56, PHHS 43

Patrick Henry traveled to the Bird Cage, Saturday, Jan. 5. The Birds outscored the Patriots in every quarter on their way to a 56-43 nonleague victory.

The Birds led 12-10 after one and 24-16 at the half. Pettisville outscored PH 15-12 in the third for a 39- 28 advantage going into the final period, and won the fourth 17-15 for the 13-point victory.

Valdez led the Birds with 15 points, followed by Reyes with 10.

A.J. Wagner led the Pats with 14.

Pettisville was 16-31 from the field, including three treys, and 21-28 at the foul line. Patrick Henry was 13- 30 from the field, including four three-pointers, and 13- 27 at the foul line.

Patrick Henry won the rebounding battle 30-23. Pettisville committed 13 turnovers while PHHS had 12.
