It took two extra periods and eight extra minutes, but the Fayette boys basketball team won the Buckeye Border Conference with a perfect 10-0 record after defeating Pettisville 49-47 in double overtime, Friday, Feb. 22, in the Bird Cage.
Pettisville (8-14, 5-5 BBC) led 11-8 after one period and 23-20 at the half. The Birds extended the gap to 32-26 after three, but the Eagles outscored PHS 14-8 to tie the score at 40 at the end of regulation.
Both teams scored four points in the first overtime to send the game into a second extra period, where Fayette scored two more points to take home a 49-47 victory.
David Reyes led a trio of Blackbirds in double figures with 15 points. Jacob Valdez scored 14, including four of the team’s seven three-pointers, and Tanner Rufenacht finished with 10.
Logan Franks and Chandler Sanford led Fayette with 12 each. Zayne Colegrove was also in double figures, with 11.
Pettisville was 15-42 from the field for 36% and 10-18 at the foul line for 56%. Fayette was 16-39 from the field for 41% and 14-26 from the foul line for 54%.
Fayette won the rebounding battle 31-26.
Pettisville plays Edon (5- 17), tonight, Wednesday, 6:15 p.m., at Bryan in a Division IV sectional semifinal. Stryker (9-13) plays Hilltop (4-18) in the nightcap.
Winners play for a sectional title, Friday, March 1, 8 p.m., at Bryan. Friday’s winners advance to the district tournament, Tuesday, March 5, 8 p.m., at Napoleon.
