PHS Boys Fall To Edon, Ayersville

Ayersville outscored Pettisville 12-2 in overtime as the Pilots handed the Birds their eighth straight loss, 62- 52, Saturday, Feb. 2, in boys basketball action.

The Blackbirds traveled to Edon, Friday, Feb. 1, and came home with a 53-45 Buckeye Border Conference loss.

PHS dropped to 5-12, 3-4 BBC.

Ayersville 62, PHS 52 OT

The score was tied at 4 when Pettisville went on a 14-6 run to end the first quarter up 18-10.

Tanner Rufenacht started the run with a three-pointer. Sigurd Rosok answered with a deuce for the Pilots.

Dominic Frey hit a basket for PHS, and Rosok hit one of two free throws. Rufenacht hit a traditional three, and Luke Lawson hit one of two foul shots for Ayersville to close the gap to 12-10.

Pettisville’s David Reyes, Korben Rychener, and Kurt Siegel hit the last three baskets of the first period for an eight-point lead.

The Pilots turned things around in the second period, outscoring PHS 17-6 for a 27-24 lead at the half.

The Birds didn’t score a field goal in the period; all six points were on free throws by Forest Stuckey, Frey, and Rufenacht.

Reyes hit the first bucket of the third period.

After Jacob Smith answered for Ayersville, Reyes hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 29.

Smith again answered for Ayersville, but Rufenacht came down for PHS and hit a three to give PHS a 32-31 lead.

Smith and Rosok hit the fi- nal two baskets of the period for a 35-32 Ayersville advantage going into the final period.

With the Pilots leading 45-42 with 4:09 left in regulation, Rufenacht fired up the crowd by hitting a threepointer and getting fouled on the play.

The PHS senior hit the free throw, and the fourpoint turnaround gave PHS a 46-45 lead.

Rufenacht scored on a pull-up jumper for a 48-45 advantage.

Lawson hit a pair of foul shots to close the gap to 48- 47.

Applying full-court pressure, Ayersville’s Trey Bauman intercepted a pass but missed the layup. Rosok grabbed the rebound and was fouled.

He hit one of two free throws to tie the score at 48 with 3:01 left.

Trey Bauman gave the Pilots a 50-48 lead with 2:40 left, but Austin Dykstra scored with 1:59 remaining to tie the score at 50.

Rufenacht’s shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim, sending Pettisville’s Homecoming game into overtime.

It was all Ayersville in the extra period.

Reyes scored Pettisville’s only two points in the OT, and the Pilots garnered their tenth victory.

Rufenacht shared scoring honors with Smith as each scored 21 points.

Pettisville was 10-11 at the foul line, while Ayersville was 18-31. The Pilots (10-7) won the rebounding battle 32-27, and Pettisville committed 19 turnovers to the Pilots’ nine.

Edon 53, PHS 45

The Blue Bombers (5-12, 2-6 BBC) led 15-10 after one period, 26-22 at the half, and 42-36 after three.

Reyes led PHS with 11 points. Frey was also in double figures, with 10.

Edon’s Kaden Sapp led all scorers with 17.
