PHS Boys Escape Panthers, Soar Over Eagles



The Pettisville boys basketball team won two Buckeye Border Conference contests last week to up their record to 4-0 in the league.

The Birds traveled to Stryker, Monday, Jan. 11 for a make-up game. PHS survived a good shooting night by the Panthers, and won 63-61 in overtime.

Pettisville traveled to Fayette, Thursday, Jan. 14, and won 44-38.

PHS 63, Stryker 61 OT

Stryker hit several threepointers in the first quarter to bolt to a 23-15 lead.

Several Pettisville starters got in foul trouble, but Michael Rufenacht and Josh Klopfenstein played well in the second quarter to keep Pettisville in the game.

Stryker (4-6, 3-1 BBC) led 39-30 going into the second half.

Pettisville held the Panthers to eight points in the third quarter while scoring 11 to cut the lead to six, 47- 41, going into the final quarthe ter. The Birds were down by two in the final seconds when Taylor Short, who earlier in the game suffered a mild concussion, hit a baseline jumper to send the game into overtime.

Pettisville outscored Stryker 7-5 in the OT thanks to free throws from Lincoln Frey and Short.

Short led PHS with 21 points. Jacob Rupp added 18.

PHS 44, Fayette 38

Pettisville again started slow, trailing 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles outscored the Birds 11-7 in the second for a 24-14 halftime lead.

Pettisville came back in the third, outscoring Fayette 15-6, with six points coming from Zach Pursel, to cut the lead to one, 30-29, going into the final quarter.

PHS outscored the Eagles 15-8 in the final quarter for 44-38 final.

Rupp led all scorers with 22 points. Pettisville was 18- 25 from the line for 72%; the Eagles (4-5, 2-2 BBC) were 4-11 for 36%.
