PHS Beats Hilltop, Falls To Holgate

Tied at 41 with four minutes left, the Holgate Tigers outscored Pettisville 5-4 to give their head girls basketball coach, Jim Niese, his 200th career victory, 46-45, Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Holgate.

Pettisville came back, Thursday, Jan. 28, and outscored Hilltop 10-6 in the fourth quarter for a 34-31 Buckeye Border Conference victory at Hilltop.

PHS is 11-7, 6-2 BBC.

Holgate 46, PHS 45

Down 15-6 after one, Pettisville went on a 16-2 run in the second for a 22-17 lead at the half.

The Tigers outscored the Birds 16-12 in the third, and PHS went into the final eight minutes leading 34-33.

Holgate (9-7) led 46-43 with 46 seconds left, but PHS was only able to score on a put-back by Morgan Leppelmeier for the 46-45 final.

“It was a well-fought game by both teams,” said Jason Waldvogel, PHS head coach. “It was a tournament-style game, and I was proud of how our girls handled it.

Leppelmeier led a trio of Blackbirds in double figures, with 15 points. Kate Kauffman finished with 11 and Anya Kauffman had 10.

Holgate’s Sarah Niese led all scorers, with 17. Gabbie Willett had 12 and Madilyn Hohenberger, 11.

Willett hit four three-pointers while Niese hit three.

PHS 34, Hilltop 31

The Cadets (7-10, 2-5 BBC) led 12-7 after one, 16-12 at the half, and 25-24 after three before the Birds outscored Hilltop in the fourth, 10-6, for the BBC victory.

“It was a slow start for us tonight, but our ladies were determined,” said Waldvogel.

Leppelmeier led all scorers, with 13 points.

Allie Schmitt scored 11 for Hilltop.

The Birds won the rebounding battle 28-24, and had four fewer turnovers.
