The winless Pettisville golf team lost four matches the week of Sept. 13.

The Blackbirds traveled to windswept Defiance, Monday, Sept. 13 and lost to Holgate 186-238.

Tyler Herschberger led PHS with a 54 but no other Blackbird broke 60. Holgate had four golfers shooting in the 40s, and was led by Landon Grime’s 43.

Hilltop 220, PHS 223

Pettisville’s chances of breaking into the win column fell short when Buckeye Border Conference rival Hilltop beat the Birds at Wauseon, 220-223, Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Tyler Herschberger’s 47 and Torin Blosser’s 54 helped the Blackbirds to a seven-stroke lead after the finish of each team’s first four golfers.

Hilltop’s number five golfer, Matt Schmitt, scored a surprise 53, which was enough to end Pettisville’s chance at a first victory.

Tinora 180, Hilltop 222,
Pettisville 236

A rainy and windy Thursday, Sept. 16 was the setting for a tri-match between Pettisville, Green Meadows powerhouse Tinora, and Hilltop at Defiance.

Tinora won with a 180. Hilltop had a 222 and Pettisville shot a 236.

Herschberger again led PHS with a 53. Tinora was led by match medalist Michael Overmier’s 39. Ethan Carothers led Hilltop with a 48.

“No coach, or team, likes to lose four times in one week,” said Ed Bracken, Pettisville coach. “But I can see a silver lining despite the losses because I remember where we were in early August when this all started.

“I think Hershy (Tyler Herschberger) has reached a new step, where his best scores in the low 50s of the last couple of weeks are now his worst scores. He should now consistently have low scores in the 40s.

“Zach (Kempf) is only in his first year, but is listening and is working hard in improving his game– especially his short game.

“Luke Meller has bought into what we’ve been working at all season, and has a better understanding of his game. Brittany Stilwill is solid, even though she is forced to play the longer mens course.

“And Torin Blosser has a unique game that he understands better and better each outing, and it shows in his improved scoring.

“The BBC tournament is Friday, Sept. 24, and I think we might surprise some people with our improved level of play. No matter what happens I am still proud of the team and its efforts this season.”
