Pettisville Girls Squeak By Hilltop Cadets 53-52

Leading 49-39 entering the fourth quarter, the Pettisville girls basketball team withstood a 13-4 run by Hilltop to squeak out a 53-52 Buckeye Border Conference victory, Saturday, Jan. 5, at Hilltop.

“It was a real nice win for us tonight,” said Jason Waldvogel, PHS head coach. “I thought it was one of our best efforts by the entire team this year.

“We had a lot of individuals step up in different situations as the game progressed, and we dealt with foul trouble.”

Pettisville (6-4, 3-1 BBC) led 17-14 after one period, but trailed 28-27 at the half. The Birds outscored the Cadets 22-11 in the third for the 10-point lead entering the final period, when Hilltop (6-3, 3-1 BBC) made its run but fell just short.

Pettisville’s Dana Fricke led all scorers with 19 points. Mikala Avina was also in double figures, with 15.

The Cadets had a trio in double figures. Jackie Smith scored 14, Emily Armbruster had 12, and Hannah Bleikamp scored 11.

Pettisville was 22-45 from the field for 49% and 6-15 at the foul line for 40%. Hilltop was 18-42 from the field for 43% and 11-21 at the foul line for 52%.

Pettisville grabbed 25 rebounds to Hilltop’s 20. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.
