Pettisville Friendship Days Start This Friday

Organizers for Pettisville Friendship Days say the festival will go on, rain or shine, thanks to large tents that will be erected for the weekend at the Pettisville Community Park.

The every-other-year community festival starts Friday, June 27, with food, games, and a benefi t auction.

Proceeds go to support the Pettisville Community Park for maintenance and development.

Steve Lauber, publicity chairman, said no one remembers for sure, but it’s believed the celebration started with the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976.

“It started to get funding for the park to buy the ground,” Lauber said.

After that, money was needed to plant trees, and eventually, build the pavilion. Now, he said, money is needed for maintenance and taxes.

Friendship Days is all-volunteer. There are 36 committee chairmanships; “quite a few are husband and wife.”

It takes about 75 volunteers.

“Pettisville is good about getting involved,” he said.

The first planning meeting was Jan. 21.

Each year, local volunteers make a quilt that’s auctioned off during the event’s auction. It is the quilters who are the first to being working on their Friendship Days project.

“The quilters start at the end of the year before. They make their plans before Christmas and start quilting in January,” he said.

In the past, the auction brought in the bulk of the revenue. But in the last three years, Lauber said the reverse raffle has become the top moneymaker.

Lauber said most other activities, including the fishing derby, corn hole, and hole-in-one tournaments, pedal tractor pull and health fair, are “low-key, general entertainment, geared towards families.”

Saturday sports events include a 5K race, one-mile run for kids, basketball, and dodgeball tournaments.
