Pax Service Topic Of TV Special Nov. 23

A television special later this month documents the service of young men who served in the PAX program during times of war.

It is on the Hallmark Channel, Sunday, Nov. 23 at 7 a.m. Eastern time, 6 a.m. Central and Mountain time.

At least 1,200 young men took part in the Pax program. Pax service began as a way to address the housing crisis in Europe after the destruction of World War II. It was one of the alternative service programs available to conscientious objectors.

Pax volunteers came from many countries, including the United States. Some were from Archbold. Included were Mennonites, Church of the Brethren members, and other churches dedicated to pacification.

The Mennonite Central Committee run Pax effort was part of John F. Kennedy’s inspiration to launch the Peace Corps program.
